Every PDF carries a small set of document properties next to its pages: a title, an author, the app that created it, when it was made and last changed. Most people never look at them, yet they show up in search results, in the tab when the file opens in a browser, and in the properties panel of anyone who receives the file. A report titled "Microsoft Word - final_v7_JM.docx" with a former employee as author is a common sight.

This editor shows those properties, lets you change any of them, and can strip them out completely. The file is read and rewritten in your browser; neither the PDF nor its metadata is uploaded.

What PDF metadata contains

The classic document information holds eight fields: Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator (the application the document was written in, shown here as Created with (app)), Producer (the software that made the PDF), and the creation and modification dates. Many files also contain an XMP packet, an XML copy of the same details that some viewers and search tools read in preference.

Alongside the editable fields, the tool shows the number of pages, the PDF version, the file size and whether XMP metadata is present. When you save, empty fields are removed rather than stored blank, and the XMP packet is dropped so it cannot keep showing the old values. Dates are entered in your device's time zone. The saved file does not get a new Producer entry from this site; only the values you type end up in it.

Reasons to edit or remove PDF metadata

Better titles in browsers and search

Browsers show the Title field in the tab when a PDF opens, and search engines can use it for the link of a published PDF. Replacing a file name such as scan0042 with a real title makes the document look finished.

Privacy before sharing

The Author field often contains your full name or the name registered in your office software, and dates reveal when a document was really written. Remove all metadata before sending a CV, a press statement or an anonymous peer review.

Consistent document libraries

Document management systems, reference managers and e-readers sort by title, author and keywords. Correct the values once and the PDF is listed under the right name wherever it is stored.

Editing versus removing everything

Change the fields you want and watch the counter of changed fields. Download with changes writes your edits, removes fields you emptied and drops the XMP copy. Only the document properties change: pages, text, images and form fields are kept as they are.

Remove all metadata goes further and downloads a cleaned copy straight away. It deletes all eight information fields, the XMP metadata of the document and of individual pages, and the private application data that programs such as Illustrator store in the file. Afterwards a viewer's properties panel shows no title, author, application or dates. The cleaned copy is saved with -no-metadata in its name, an edited one with -edited.

Comment utiliser cet outil

  1. Drop a PDF on the box above or pick it from your device (up to 200 MB).
  2. Review the current values and the file details next to them.
  3. Edit, fill in or clear any of the fields, including the Created and Modified dates.
  4. Press Download with changes to save your edits, or Remove all metadata to download a stripped copy.

What this editor does not change

  • Hidden data outside the document properties stays: author names on comments and annotations, camera details inside embedded photos, attachments and the file name itself are not touched.
  • Custom properties that some apps add are not listed for editing and are kept when you save edits; Remove all metadata deletes them along with everything else.
  • Password-protected PDFs and files locked against changes cannot be opened; use Unlock PDF first if you are allowed to.
  • Saving rewrites the file, so a digital signature in it stops validating.

Questions fréquentes

How do I see who created a PDF?

Open the file here and look at Author, Created with (app) and Producer. Author is whatever the creating application filled in, often the computer's user name. It can be blank or wrong, so treat it as a hint rather than proof.

Does removing metadata change how the PDF looks?

No. Only the document properties and XMP data are removed. Every page looks exactly the same and text stays selectable.

Why do the old values still appear in some programs after editing?

Some programs cache file properties, and a few read a copy of the details from a different part of the file. This tool removes the XMP copy when saving, so after reopening the edited file the new values should appear everywhere.

Can I change the creation date of a PDF?

Yes. Created and Modified are editable date and time fields. Clear them to remove the dates entirely.
