Small text means characters that sit higher, lower or smaller than normal letters while still being ordinary text: ᵗʰⁱˢ, ₜₕᵢₛ and ᴛʜɪꜱ. They are useful for chemical formulas, exponents like 10³, footnote markers and a quieter line in a social bio. Because they are real Unicode characters rather than formatting, they keep their size when pasted into a chat, a comment box or a spreadsheet cell that has no superscript option.

Type in the Your text box and the three versions appear at once, each with a copy button. Letters that have no tiny form in Unicode are kept as they are, so you can see straight away which parts of your text convert cleanly.

Where tiny letters come from in Unicode

Unicode never set out to offer a tiny alphabet. The superscript digits ¹, ² and ³ came from the old Latin-1 character set, the remaining digits and the subscripts were added for mathematics and chemistry, and most small letters are modifier letters from phonetic notation, where linguists write ʰ to mark a puff of air after a consonant. Small capitals such as ᴀ and ʙ come from phonetic alphabets too. Because they were collected from different sources, they do not form a complete or perfectly matched set.

The gaps matter in practice. There is no superscript q at all, so it stays a normal q, and for the capitals C, F, S, X, Y and Z the tool uses the small raised lowercase form because no raised capital exists. Subscript is the patchiest: Unicode only has subscript forms of a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v and x, so a word like big cannot be fully lowered. Small caps covers every letter except x, which keeps its normal shape, and q, which uses a close look-alike. Digits 0 to 9 and the signs + - = ( ) convert in both superscript and subscript.

Good uses for small text

Chemistry and maths in plain text

Write CO₂, H₂SO₄ or 2⁸ = 256 in a chat, a forum answer or a spreadsheet label where you cannot format text. Convert only the part that should be small: typing CO2 would also lower the O, so type 2, copy its subscript and paste it after CO.

Footnotes, ordinals and marks

Superscript digits make neat footnote markers in a caption, and raised letters give ordinals such as 1ˢᵗ and 2ⁿᵈ or a small ᵀᴹ after a product name in a description.

A quieter line in a bio

Small caps reads like a label, for example ᴘʜᴏᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜᴇʀ · ʟᴏɴᴅᴏɴ. Many people use it for the second line of an Instagram or TikTok bio, or for a subtle tag beside a gaming name.

How the three styles are made

Each style is a lookup table. As you type, every character is checked against the table and swapped for its small counterpart if one exists; everything else, including spaces, punctuation, emoji and non-Latin scripts, is copied across untouched. The lookup runs in your browser on each keystroke, so there is no button to press and nothing leaves your device.

Fonts decide the final look. Superscript and subscript characters come from several Unicode blocks, so in some fonts they sit at slightly different heights or sizes, especially when modifier letters are mixed with raised digits. That unevenness is normal and differs between iPhone, Android and Windows. For a printed document or a school report, the superscript and subscript buttons in a word processor give a more consistent result; this tool is for places where those buttons do not exist.

Как пользоваться инструментом

  1. Type or paste text into the Your text box, for example H2O or x2.
  2. Look at the Superscript, Subscript and Small caps cards that appear below.
  3. If only part of your text should be small, such as the 2 in H2O, type just that part.
  4. Press the copy icon on the card you want and paste the result where you need it.

Limits of small text

  • Unicode has no superscript q and no subscript forms of b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y or z, so those letters stay full size.
  • Raised and lowered characters may sit at uneven heights depending on the font of the app that shows them.
  • Screen readers may announce modifier letters by name or skip them, so keep essential information out of small text.
  • The whole input is converted. To mix normal and small characters, convert the small part on its own and assemble the pieces.

Частые вопросы

How do I type superscript 2 or 3 on a keyboard?

On Windows, holding Alt and typing 0178 or 0179 on the numeric keypad gives ² or ³. Most other raised and lowered characters have no simple shortcut on any system, which is why copying them from a generator is usually quicker.

Why does my subscript text still contain normal letters?

Those letters have no subscript version in Unicode. Only 17 lowercase letters exist as subscripts, so words containing b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y or z will always be partly full size. Superscript and small caps cover far more of the alphabet.

Can I use small caps in a username?

Display names on most social apps accept it. Handles and usernames are usually restricted to plain letters, numbers, dots and underscores, so small caps is likely to be refused there.
