Audio formats exist for different jobs. Recorders produce WAV, collectors keep FLAC, iPhones record M4A, games favour OGG and nearly everything else expects MP3. Sooner or later a file is in the wrong one: a WAV too big to email, or a FLAC album your car stereo will not read.

This converter reads MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A, AAC and FLAC and writes MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A or FLAC. Choose an output format and, for the compressed formats, a bitrate, add as many files as you like and press Convert. Everything happens in your browser.

Lossless or lossy: the choice that matters most

WAV and FLAC are lossless. WAV stores the raw samples, about 10 MB per minute for CD-quality stereo; this tool writes 16-bit PCM, which almost everything opens. FLAC holds exactly the same samples but compresses them like a ZIP file does, typically to around half or two thirds of the WAV size, and decodes back to an identical copy.

MP3, M4A and OGG are lossy. They discard sounds that listeners are unlikely to notice, which is how a minute of music shrinks to roughly 1.4 MB at 192 kbps. MP3 is encoded with LAME and plays absolutely everywhere. M4A carries AAC audio, which is generally a little more efficient than MP3 at the same bitrate and is native to Apple devices. OGG uses Vorbis, an open, royalty-free codec common in games and Linux software. The one-way rule: converting lossy to lossless makes a bigger file but cannot restore what was discarded, while converting between two lossy formats loses a little more each time.

Common audio conversions

WAV or FLAC to MP3 for everyday listening

A FLAC album can take several hundred megabytes. As 192 or 256 kbps MP3 it shrinks to a fraction of that and plays on any phone or car stereo, with differences most people cannot hear.

M4A voice memos to MP3

Phone recordings are often M4A, while many websites and older programs expect MP3. Converting at 128 kbps keeps speech clear and the file small.

MP3 or M4A to WAV for editing

Video editors, DAWs and broadcast systems often prefer uncompressed WAV. Decoding to WAV does not improve the sound, but it avoids another lossy generation when the audio is edited and exported again.

WAV to FLAC for archiving

If you keep recordings or ripped CDs long term, FLAC saves a large share of the space while staying bit-for-bit identical to the WAV, so you can always convert back.

Bitrate guide and how the conversion runs

The Bitrate menu offers 96, 128, 192, 256 and 320 kbps and starts at 192. It applies to MP3, M4A and OGG and is ignored for WAV and FLAC. For speech, 96 or 128 kbps is plenty. For music, 192 kbps is a good default, and 256 or 320 kbps leaves extra headroom for high-quality sources. When the source is already lossy, there is little point choosing a bitrate above the original's; it makes the file larger without making it sound better.

Conversion is handled by ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It downloads once, about 31 MB, the first time you press Convert on a video or audio tool, and your browser keeps it afterwards. It runs on a single thread, so a large batch of long FLAC files takes a while on an older phone, but audio is light work compared with video. Sample rate and channel count are kept wherever the output format supports them (MP3 tops out at 48 kHz stereo), files can be up to 500 MB each, and files above 200 MB may exceed the memory some browsers allow.

طريقة الاستخدام

  1. Drop one or more MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A, AAC or FLAC files on the box above, or click it to browse.
  2. Under Output format, choose MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A or FLAC.
  3. For MP3, M4A or OGG, pick a Bitrate between 96 and 320 kbps.
  4. Press Convert and wait until every file shows Done.
  5. Download the files one by one, or press Download all (.zip).

Limitations

  • Lossy to lossless conversion cannot recover quality that the source never had.
  • WAV output is 16-bit, so 24-bit studio recordings lose their extra bit depth when saved as WAV here. Choose FLAC to keep it.
  • Embedded cover art is not carried into the converted file.
  • Video files are not accepted. To get the sound from an MP4, use MP4 to MP3; to shorten a file, use Trim Audio.

الأسئلة الشائعة

Is WAV better quality than MP3?

A WAV made from an original recording is lossless, so it holds more information than any MP3. But a WAV converted from an MP3 sounds exactly like that MP3; it is simply several times larger.

Should I choose FLAC or WAV?

For storing music, FLAC: it is lossless and much smaller. For software that does not read FLAC, such as some video editors and older devices, use WAV.

What is the best bitrate for MP3?

192 kbps is a sensible default for music, 128 kbps for spoken word. 320 kbps is the highest MP3 allows and is worth it only when the source is lossless and storage is not a concern.

What is the difference between M4A and AAC?

Both contain AAC audio. A .aac file is the bare stream, while M4A wraps it in an MP4 container that supports tags, seeking and wider device support. This tool reads both and writes M4A.
