Writing in Markdown is fast, but reviewers, clients and editors often live in Microsoft Word. Sending them a .md file means questions about how to open it; pasting rendered text into Word loses the heading styles and produces lists that renumber themselves badly. This converter builds a genuine .docx file from your Markdown, using Word's own styles so the result behaves like a document someone wrote in Word.
Drop one file or a stack of them and get a .docx for each. They are generated inside your browser, which means drafts, proposals and internal documentation stay on your device.
What the Word document contains
Headings use the built-in Heading 1 to Heading 6 styles, so Word's navigation pane, automatic table of contents and outline view work immediately. Bulleted and numbered lists are real Word lists rather than typed characters: nested items are indented level by level, numbering restarts for each new list, and a list that starts at 5 in your Markdown starts at 5 in Word. Task list items get a ☐ or ☒ box in front of the text, because Word has no checklist type.
Bold, italic and strikethrough carry over, and web and email links become clickable hyperlinks. Inline code and code blocks are set in Consolas on a light grey background. Tables span the page width with a shaded, bold header row that repeats at the top of every page the table runs onto, and column alignment from the Markdown (:---: or ---:) is applied. Block quotes get a grey left border and grey text, and horizontal rules become a thin line. Body text is Calibri 11 pt, and the document title in File, Info is taken from your first heading or, if there is none, the file name.
When you need Markdown as a Word file
Sending drafts for review
Editors and legal or compliance teams usually review in Word with Track Changes and comments. Converting the Markdown gives them a familiar file, and their changes are easy to see.
Submitting to people who require .docx
Publishers, journals, agencies and many workplaces ask for Word files. Writers who draft in Obsidian, iA Writer, VS Code or another Markdown editor can deliver in the expected format without retyping.
Documents in right-to-left languages
Paragraphs written mainly in Arabic or Hebrew are marked right-to-left and aligned to the right, while English paragraphs and code stay left to right. Mixed-language notes come out readable without fixing every paragraph by hand.
How the conversion works
The file is read as UTF-8 and parsed with marked using GitHub-flavoured rules, so pipe tables, task lists and ~~strikethrough~~ are recognised. The parsed blocks are then written into a .docx with the open-source docx library inside a Web Worker. There are no options: the styling is fixed, and you can restyle everything afterwards by changing the Word styles.
Two things are reduced on purpose, as the note above the Convert button says. Images are not downloaded, because that would mean fetching files from the internet; each image is replaced by its alt text in italics, so becomes the words Sales chart. Raw HTML inside the Markdown is reduced to its text. Links that are not web or email addresses, such as relative links to other .md files, are kept as plain text because they would point nowhere inside a Word file.
طريقة الاستخدام
- Drop one or more .md, .markdown or .txt files on the box above, or click Choose files. Each can be up to 10 MB.
- Press Convert. There are no settings to choose.
- Download each .docx file when it shows Done.
- With several files, press Download all (.zip) to save them together.
Limitations
- Images are not embedded: only their alt text appears. Insert the pictures in Word afterwards.
- Footnotes ([^1]), math formulas, Mermaid diagrams and YAML front matter are not interpreted and may appear as plain text or a stray line.
- Code blocks have no syntax colouring.
- Fonts, page size and margins cannot be chosen; they are Word defaults you can change in the document.
- The input must be a file. To convert text you only have on the clipboard, save it as a .md or .txt file first.
