Cutting audio should not need a full editing program: shortening a song into a ringtone, removing the silence before a voice memo starts or pulling a quote out of an interview. This trimmer does it in the browser with a visual waveform, typed timestamps and optional fades.

Load an MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A, AAC or FLAC file, mark the start and end, decide whether the clip should fade in or out, and choose the format to save it in. The cut is made on your device and the original file is never changed.

Seeing the sound: waveform, selection and fades

The waveform draws the loudness of the recording across time: speech shows up as clusters of peaks and pauses as flat stretches, so you can spot where a sentence or a chorus starts without listening to the whole file. Clicking the waveform moves the playhead.

A fade gradually raises the volume from silence at the start of the clip or lowers it to silence at the end. Without one, a cut made in the middle of a sound can begin or end with an audible click or an abrupt stop. Even half a second of fade usually sounds natural; for ringtones and background music, two to four seconds is common. If the two fades together would be longer than the clip, they are shortened in proportion to fit.

Popular reasons to trim audio

Making a ringtone or alert sound

Ringtones work best as a short, recognisable loop of 20 to 30 seconds. Android phones accept an MP3 directly. iPhone ringtones are AAC files with the .m4r extension and a limit of about 40 seconds, so save as M4A here and rename the file before adding it with your computer.

Cleaning up voice memos and interviews

Recordings often start with seconds of shuffling and end with someone reaching for the stop button. Trimming both ends tidies the file, and cutting out a single answer gives you a clip to quote or forward.

Clips for videos, podcasts and presentations

An intro sting, a sound effect or a few bars for a slideshow need only seconds of the source, and a short fade at each end lets the clip sit cleanly in an editor.

Formats, bitrate and processing

Output format offers MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG and FLAC, and starts on the same format as your file; AAC files default to M4A, which holds the same AAC audio in a more widely recognised container. Lossy outputs are encoded at a bitrate matched to the source: the tool works out the original's average bitrate and picks the nearest standard rate at or above it, so a 64 kbps podcast stays small and a 320 kbps track stays at 320 kbps. Lossless sources such as WAV and FLAC are saved at 320 kbps, the highest standard rate, when you choose a lossy format. WAV and FLAC outputs are lossless and need no bitrate.

Every trim is re-encoded, which is what makes cuts and fades exact to a fraction of a second. Saving an MP3 as MP3 therefore adds one more round of lossy compression, which is rarely audible at the matched bitrate; save as FLAC or WAV if you need a perfect copy. The work is done by ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, which downloads once (about 31 MB) the first time it is needed and is then cached by your browser. It runs on one thread, so long files take longer on phones, and files above 200 MB may run out of memory there.

So verwenden Sie dieses Tool

  1. Drop an MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A, AAC or FLAC file on the box above, or click Choose a file.
  2. Drag the handles under the waveform, type times such as 0:42.5 in Start and End, or pause the player where you want and press the crosshair buttons to set either edge.
  3. Press Play selection to listen, then set Fade in and Fade out between 0 and 10 seconds if you want softer edges.
  4. Choose the Output format, press Trim audio, play the result and press the download button to save it.

Limitations

  • One file and one continuous section at a time; a middle part cannot be cut out.
  • Lossy outputs always use the matched bitrate; there is no manual bitrate choice here. Use Convert Audio afterwards if you need a specific one.
  • Recordings over 20 minutes or 40 MB are decoded for the waveform by the converter at a low sample rate, which takes a moment longer, and recordings over two hours show no waveform; trim them by listening and typing times. Files over 500 MB are not accepted.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

How do I make a ringtone from a song?

Load the song, select about 20 to 30 seconds around the part you like, add a fade out of two or three seconds and press Trim audio. Save as MP3 for Android, or as M4A for iPhone and rename the file to end in .m4r.

Does trimming an MP3 lose quality?

Slightly, because the clip is decoded and encoded again so the cut and fades can be exact. The bitrate is matched to the original, so the difference is very hard to hear. Choose WAV or FLAC for a lossless copy.

Can I trim the audio of a video file?

This page takes audio files only. Extract the sound from an MP4 with MP4 to MP3 first, or use Trim Video to shorten the video with its sound.
