JPG is a delivery format. It is excellent for sending a finished photo, but every time a JPG is opened, changed and saved, it is compressed again and loses a little more detail. What a JPG to PNG conversion does and does not do
The converter decodes the JPG to pixels and stores those pixels in a PNG file without any further approximation. From that point on you can save the PNG as many times as you like and it will not degrade. That is the whole benefit: PNG stops the rot. It does not reverse it. Blockiness, colour banding or blur already baked into the JPG are copied faithfully into the PNG, because the detail they replaced no longer exists anywhere in the file.
It also does not make the background transparent on its own. A JPG has no alpha channel, so the PNG starts out fully opaque. What PNG gives you is the ability to hold transparency: once the image is a PNG, you can erase the background in an editor such as GIMP, Photopea or Photoshop and save it without the format filling those areas back in.

Retouching a portrait, restoring a scanned photograph or building a collage usually involves many saves. Working on a PNG means the tenth save looks exactly like the first, and you export a JPG only once, when the job is done.
Preparing cut-outs and stickers
To remove a background you need a format that can store transparency. Converting the product shot or portrait to PNG first gives you a file that keeps the erased areas clear when you save it.
Screenshots and diagrams saved as JPG by mistake
Some apps and phones save screen captures as JPG. If you plan to add arrows, labels or redactions, convert to PNG before editing so the text and new annotations stay crisp instead of picking up fresh artefacts with each save.
The conversion step by step
A Web Worker decodes the JPG with createImageBitmap, draws it at full size onto an off-screen canvas, and exports the canvas as image/png. Because PNG compression is lossless, there is no quality slider: the output pixels match the decoded input pixels.
Be ready for larger files. A 2 MB phone photo commonly becomes a PNG several times that size, since PNG has to describe every bit of sensor noise and texture exactly, while JPG was allowed to simplify it. That is the cost of a lossless working copy. When you are finished editing, export the final version as JPG or WebP for sharing.
