Area causes more conversion mistakes than length because the factor is squared. A meter is about 3.28 feet, but a square meter is about 10.76 square feet, not 3.28. Mixing the two is how a 100 m² apartment ends up advertised as 328 ft² instead of the correct 1,076. This converter applies the squared factors for you across eleven units and updates as you type.
It covers the small units used for paper and components, the metric and imperial units of homes and offices, and the land units of farms and plots: hectares, acres and the dunam used across the Middle East. The calculation runs in your browser and the full table of equivalents is shown under every result.
Square units, land units and the dunam
Most area units are simply a length unit squared. Since a foot is exactly 0.3048 m, a square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m², and since an inch is 0.0254 m, a square inch is 0.00064516 m². A square mile is 2,589,988.110336 m², which is exactly 640 acres.
Land units are defined differently. A hectare is 10,000 m², the area of a square 100 m on each side, and a square kilometer holds 100 hectares. The international acre is 43,560 square feet, or exactly 4,046.8564224 m², so one hectare is about 2.471 acres. The dunam (also spelled donum or dönüm) comes from the Ottoman land system and is still used in Jordan, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Turkey and Cyprus. This tool uses the metric dunam of exactly 1,000 m², which makes 10 dunams equal to one hectare.
Regional dunams vary. In Iraq the dunam traditionally means 2,500 m², and older Ottoman and Cypriot measures were different again. If a document predates metrication or comes from a place that uses its own value, check the definition before relying on the conversion.
Where area conversions come up
Comparing homes and rentals
Listings in North America quote square feet while most of the world uses square meters. A 1,000 ft² flat is 92.90304 m², and a 100 m² flat is 1,076.39104167 ft². Converting both to one unit makes price per area comparable.
Buying or valuing land
A plot of 5 dunams is 5,000 m², which is half a hectare or about 1.24 acres. Farmland and planning documents may switch between hectares, acres and local units, so seeing all of them side by side helps avoid costly misreadings.
Flooring, paint and materials
Tiles, carpet and laminate are sold per square meter in some shops and per square foot in others. Measure the room, convert its area and add a waste allowance before ordering.
How it works
Each unit is stored as its exact size in square meters. Your value is multiplied into square meters and divided by the target unit, then displayed with up to 12 significant digits. Exact relationships stay exact: 1 acre shows 43,560 ft² and 1 mi² shows 640 acres, while 1 ha shows 2.47105381467 acres.
Type in the Value field, set From and To, and read the Result panel. The All units table lists square millimeters, square centimeters, square meters, hectares, square kilometers, dunams, square inches, square feet, square yards, acres and square miles. Click any of them to make it the target unit, or copy a single row. A note under the result restates the dunam definition used.
Cara memakai alat ini
- Measure or look up the area, then type the number into Value.
- In From, pick the unit it is given in, such as Square meter (m²) or Dunam.
- In To, pick the unit you need, such as Square foot (ft²) or Acre.
- Read or copy the result, and use the All units table to compare hectares, acres and dunams together.
Limitations
- The tool converts areas only. To get an area from a length and a width, multiply them first in one unit, for example 4 m × 5 m = 20 m².
- The dunam is fixed at 1,000 m². For the Iraqi dunam of 2,500 m², divide this tool's dunam figure by 2.5.
- South Asian land units such as the marla, kanal and bigha, whose size varies by region, are not included.
- The acre is the international acre. The slightly larger US survey acre differs by only about four parts per million and is not offered separately.
