The usual reason to turn a PDF into Word is to change it: update a CV whose original file is lost, reuse a section of a report, or correct a document someone only sent as PDF. This converter rebuilds the text of each page as Word paragraphs, marks titles and section headings with Word's heading styles and saves a .docx file that opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages.
It is a text-first conversion that runs entirely in your browser. You get clean, editable paragraphs rather than a fragile imitation of the layout, which is often exactly what editing needs. Pictures, tables and exact fonts are not recreated, so for a pixel-perfect replica this is the wrong tool; for the words in an editable form, it is quick and private.
How the Word document is rebuilt
PDF stores text as positioned fragments, not as paragraphs. The converter reads those fragments with PDF.js, groups them into lines by their baseline, then joins lines into paragraphs wherever the vertical spacing stays close to the normal line spacing. A word broken with a hyphen at the end of a line is rejoined, so editing does not leave stray hyphens in the middle of sentences.
Headings are detected by size. The most common font size on a page is treated as body text; lines at least 1.75 times larger become Heading 1 and lines at least 1.25 times larger become Heading 2. Because they use Word's built-in styles, they show up in the navigation pane and can feed a table of contents. Paragraphs written mostly in Arabic, Hebrew or another right-to-left script are marked right-to-left and right-aligned, so they read correctly in Word.
When PDF to Word is the right conversion
Updating a CV or cover letter
If the only copy of your CV is a PDF, converting it gives you editable text with the section headings already styled, ready to drop into a new template instead of being retyped from scratch.
Reusing text from reports and articles
Bring sections of a report, policy or article into Word for quoting, rewriting or translation, with each paragraph in one piece rather than broken at every line, as copying from a viewer tends to leave it.
Marking up a draft you received as PDF
When a counterparty sends a letter or contract draft only as PDF, converting it lets you suggest wording with tracked changes in Word. Compare the result with the original, since layout details are not reproduced.
Page breaks and output
The option New Word page for each PDF page is on by default and starts each PDF page on a fresh Word page, which keeps page references aligned with the original. Turn it off for one continuous flow of text, which is easier to edit when PDF page boundaries fell in the middle of sentences.
The .docx file takes the PDF's name. You can add several PDFs at once and each becomes its own Word file. If a PDF contains only images, as scanned documents do, the converter stops with a message that no selectable text was found and that the file may be a scan. There is no OCR here, so a scanned file has to go through an OCR program first.
Come usare questo strumento
- Drop one or more PDFs on the box above, or click Choose files (up to 200 MB each).
- Keep New Word page for each PDF page on to mirror the original pagination, or turn it off for continuous text.
- Press Convert and wait while each page is read.
- Download the .docx file and open it in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice.
What is not converted
- Images, charts and logos are left out; only the text is converted.
- Tables come out as plain paragraphs rather than Word tables, and multi-column pages usually become a single column.
- Fonts, colours, bold, italics and exact spacing are not kept; the text uses the document's default style apart from the detected headings.
- Scanned PDFs without a text layer cannot be converted, because there is no OCR.
- Password-protected PDFs need their password removed first.
