The Hijri calendar governs Ramadan, Eid, Hajj and many official documents across the Muslim world, while most of daily life runs on the Gregorian calendar. This converter works in both directions and gives the weekday as well.

Results appear in English with transliterated month names and in Arabic with Arabic-Indic digits, ready to copy into a letter or form. Today's date in both calendars is shown at the top. The conversion uses calendar data built into your browser, so nothing is sent to a server.

How the Hijri calendar works

The Hijri or Islamic calendar is lunar. Each of its twelve months, from Muharram to Dhu al-Hijjah, begins with the new crescent moon and lasts 29 or 30 days, so a Hijri year has 354 or 355 days. That is about 11 days shorter than a solar year, which is why Ramadan moves earlier through the Gregorian seasons each year and completes a full cycle in roughly 33 years. Years are counted from the Hijra in 622 CE and written with AH (anno Hegirae) or هـ.

There is no single way to decide when a month begins. The Umm al-Qura calendar, the official civil calendar of Saudi Arabia, fixes month starts in advance using astronomical criteria for Mecca. Many other countries and communities begin each month only after the crescent has been seen, by local sighting or by following a national religious authority, and some use calculated calendars of their own. Because the crescent may be visible in one place and not another, the same day can be the 29th of a month in one country and the 1st of the next month elsewhere.

This converter uses Umm al-Qura. For civil dates in Saudi Arabia it matches the official calendar. For religious dates such as the start of Ramadan or the day of Eid in your country, treat the result as an expected date that may differ by a day, occasionally two, from the announcement where you live.

When to convert between Hijri and Gregorian

Planning around Ramadan, Eid and Hajj

Umm al-Qura places 1 Ramadan 1447 on Wednesday 18 February 2026, 1 Shawwal 1447 on Friday 20 March 2026 and 10 Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 on Wednesday 27 May 2026. Use them to plan leave or travel, keeping the moon-sighting caveat in mind.

Official papers and contracts

Saudi documents such as residency permits, contracts and some ID records have used Hijri dates. Converting an expiry date to Gregorian, or a Gregorian birth date to Hijri for a form, avoids counting months by hand.

Family records and history

Older certificates and letters from the region are often dated only in Hijri. Converting them lets you line them up with other records.

Using the converter

In Gregorian to Hijri mode, choose a date in the Gregorian date field. The result shows the Hijri date in English, for example 4 Jumada al-awwal 1448 AH for 15 October 2026, the same date in Arabic as ٤ جمادى الأولى ١٤٤٨ هـ, and the weekday in both languages.

In Hijri to Gregorian mode, type the Hijri year, pick the month from the list and type the day. The result gives the Gregorian date with its weekday and the ISO form, such as 2026-02-18. If you enter a day that a month does not have, the tool tells you how many days that month has; Ramadan 1448, for example, has 29 days in Umm al-Qura, so day 30 is rejected. The copy button copies the result in both languages or the formatted Gregorian date.

The calculation relies on the Umm al-Qura tables in your browser's international date library, which cover the Hijri years 1300 to 1600, roughly 1882 to 2174 CE.

Bu araç nasıl kullanılır

  1. Choose Gregorian to Hijri or Hijri to Gregorian under Conversion direction.
  2. For Gregorian to Hijri, pick the date in the Gregorian date field.
  3. For Hijri to Gregorian, enter the Hijri year, choose the Month and type the Day.
  4. Read the result in English and Arabic, and press the copy button to use it elsewhere.

Limitations

  • Results follow the Umm al-Qura calendar. Where months start by local moon sighting, the actual date can be a day or two different, especially for Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
  • Both directions are limited to the Umm al-Qura tables: Hijri years 1300 to 1600 AH, which is 12 November 1882 to 25 November 2174. Gregorian dates outside that span are refused rather than given an approximate Hijri date.
  • A Hijri day begins at sunset, but conversion is day to day on the Gregorian calendar. An event after sunset may already belong to the next Hijri date.
  • Other variants, such as the tabular Islamic calendar, are not offered.

Sıkça sorulan sorular

What is today's Hijri date?

The converter shows it at the top of the tool, in both calendars, based on your device's date. On 15 October 2026 it is 4 Jumada al-awwal 1448 by Umm al-Qura.

Why is the Hijri date different in my country?

Many countries start each month by local moon sighting rather than the Umm al-Qura calendar. When the crescent is seen a day later or earlier, the local date shifts by a day compared with this converter.

What is the Umm al-Qura calendar?

It is the official Hijri calendar of Saudi Arabia, computed in advance from astronomical data for Mecca.

How many days are in a Hijri month?

Either 29 or 30. In Umm al-Qura the length of each month is set by the calendar tables, and the converter reports the correct length when a day is out of range.
