Double-clicking a CSV file in Excel looks like it works, until you notice the damage. ZIP codes like 02134 lose their leading zero, an 18-digit order number turns into 1.23457E+17, accented names come out garbled, and a semicolon-separated file lands in a single column. Converting to a real .xlsx workbook before you open or share it avoids all four problems.

Add one or more CSV, TSV or TXT files and each becomes its own Excel workbook with a single sheet. The delimiter is detected, numbers and TRUE/FALSE are stored as real values, anything that would be altered stays text, and every column is widened to fit its content. Parsing and writing are done in a Web Worker on your device, and the files are never uploaded.

Why open CSV through a converter

CSV is plain text with no notion of types, encodings or column widths. When Excel opens one directly it applies its own guesses: anything that looks numeric becomes a number, things that look like dates are read in your regional format, and the encoding is assumed from system settings unless the file starts with a byte order mark. Those guesses happen silently and cannot be undone by changing the cell format afterwards, because the original text is already gone.

An XLSX file (Office Open XML, a ZIP archive of XML parts) stores every cell with an explicit type. By deciding the types when the workbook is written, this converter controls what Excel sees: 007 is stored as text, 12.5 as a number, TRUE as a boolean. Excel then shows the data exactly as the CSV contained it, and the workbook opens the same way in LibreOffice, Numbers and Google Sheets.

When a workbook beats a CSV

Sharing exports with non-technical colleagues

A report pulled from a database or a SaaS export is easier for a manager to open as .xlsx: no import wizard, no broken columns, and the widths are already set.

Data with codes and identifiers

Postal codes, phone numbers with a leading zero, SKUs such as 0012 and IDs longer than 15 digits are kept as text. Excel holds numbers as 64-bit floating point with 15 significant digits, so a 16-digit card number or a 19-digit snowflake ID would otherwise end in zeros.

Files from other regions

A semicolon-separated export from a European system, or a tab-separated file from a database client, is split into the right columns regardless of your computer's list separator setting.

What happens to each file

The file is decoded as UTF-8 with or without a byte order mark, as UTF-16 when it starts with one (the format of Excel's Unicode Text export), or as Windows-1252 when it is not valid UTF-8. The text is then split using the RFC 4180 rules, so quoted fields may contain delimiters and line breaks. Delimiter offers Detect automatically, Comma, Semicolon, Tab and Pipe.

With Store numbers and TRUE/FALSE as values switched on, the default, a cell becomes a number only when the conversion is lossless: no leading zeros, no trailing zeros after the decimal point and at most 15 significant digits. true and false, in lower or upper case, become Excel booleans, and empty fields stay empty cells. Turn the switch off to store every cell as text. Dates are always kept as text, so 03/04/2024 is never reinterpreted as a different day.

The sheet is named after the file, without the characters Excel forbids in sheet names ([ ] : * ? / \) and cut to 31 characters. Column widths are estimated from the first 1,000 rows and kept between 8 and 50 characters. The result is a compressed .xlsx file named like the source.

Bu araç nasıl kullanılır

  1. Drop CSV, TSV or TXT files onto the box, or click it to choose them; each can be up to 50 MB.
  2. Open Options and leave Delimiter on Detect automatically, or pick the separator your files use.
  3. Keep Store numbers and TRUE/FALSE as values on, or turn it off to keep every cell as text.
  4. Press Convert, then download each workbook, or use Download all (.zip) for a batch.

Limits

  • Excel's own limits apply: a file with more than 1,048,576 rows, more than 16,384 columns or a cell longer than 32,767 characters is refused rather than silently cut.
  • Each CSV becomes a separate workbook with one sheet; combining several files into one workbook is not supported.
  • No styling, filters or frozen header row are added, and a value starting with = is stored as text, not as a live formula.
  • Dates and times stay text, and decimal commas such as 3,5 are not converted to numbers.

Sıkça sorulan sorular

Why does Excel ruin my CSV when I open it directly?

Excel converts the text while it opens the file: leading zeros are dropped, long numbers are cut to 15 digits and shown in scientific notation, and some codes are turned into dates. Converting to XLSX first fixes every cell type in advance, so Excel has nothing left to guess.

What is the difference between CSV and XLSX?

CSV is a plain-text format holding one table with no types, styles or extra sheets. XLSX has been Excel's native format since 2007: a zipped set of XML files storing typed cells, formatting, formulas and many sheets. CSV is better for moving data between programs, XLSX for people working in a spreadsheet.

Can I convert many CSV files at once?

Yes. Add as many files as you like. Each produces its own workbook named after the source file, and Download all (.zip) saves them together.

Will Google Sheets or LibreOffice open the result?

Yes. The output is a standard Office Open XML workbook, which Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers and every Excel version since 2007 can read.
