A watermark tells anyone holding the document what it is and where it came from: a DRAFT that must not be signed yet, a CONFIDENTIAL board paper, a SAMPLE contract, a proposal carrying your company logo. Because the mark is part of every page, it survives printing, screenshots and forwarding in a way a note in the email never does.
Type the text or choose a logo, pick a layout and how strong the mark should be, and press Convert. The watermark is drawn into the pages of the PDF on your own device, the original file is left unchanged, and nothing is uploaded.
What a PDF watermark is
A PDF watermark is text or an image drawn over the content of a page, usually large and semi-transparent so the page underneath stays readable. Here it is added to the page content itself, not as a comment or a layer that a viewer can switch off, so it appears in every viewer and on every printout.
Text in Latin letters, including accented ones such as é or ß, is drawn as real text in Helvetica Bold and stays sharp at any zoom. Text in other scripts, such as Arabic, Hebrew, Cyrillic, Chinese or emoji, cannot be drawn with the standard PDF fonts, so it is rendered as a transparent image with your device's own fonts and placed the same way. Right-to-left text keeps its direction.
When to watermark a PDF
Drafts under review
A diagonal DRAFT in light gray on every page stops an unfinished contract or policy from being mistaken for the final version, while leaving the text easy to comment on.
Confidential and internal documents
Board packs, salary reviews and due-diligence files marked CONFIDENTIAL in red make the sensitivity obvious to everyone who opens them, including people the file was forwarded to without permission.
Branding proposals and samples
A faint company logo in the center of each page, or tiled across it, identifies portfolio samples, quotes and preview chapters, and discourages reusing them as if they were someone else's work.
Layouts, opacity, size and pages
Layout decides where the mark goes. Diagonal places one copy from corner to corner, and Size (%) is the share of the diagonal it spans. Centered places one level copy in the middle, sized as a share of the page width. Tiled repeats smaller copies at 45 degrees in staggered rows across the whole page, which makes cropping the mark out much harder. A single copy is never allowed to grow taller than 90 percent of the page.
Opacity (%) runs from 5 to 100; 20 to 40 keeps the page readable. Text color offers gray, red, blue and black. Pages can be All, Odd, Even or Range, where you type pages such as 1-3, 8. To use a logo, choose a PNG, JPG or WebP file under Image instead of text (optional); it replaces the text, keeps its own colors and takes the same layout, size and opacity. A PNG with a transparent background gives the cleanest result.

Limitations
- A watermark deters and labels; it does not prevent copying. Someone with a full PDF editor can remove a mark drawn as text, so add an open password with Protect PDF when access must be controlled.
- The watermark sits on top of the page content. At high opacity it can hide what is underneath.
- Non-Latin text is drawn as an image, so it cannot be searched, and its look depends on the fonts installed on your device.
- Password-protected PDFs and files locked against changes are refused, and a digital signature already in the PDF stops validating once the watermark is added.
