NeedToConvert started in 2026 with one rule: a file converter should not need your file. Every tool on this site decodes, converts and re-encodes files inside your browser, using the browser’s own image and PDF capabilities, Web Workers and, for video and audio, FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your files are never uploaded, stored or logged.
Why browser-based
Traditional online converters upload your file to a server, queue it, convert it and let you download the result. That is slow, it costs the operator money, and it means a copy of your document exists somewhere you cannot see. Modern browsers are powerful enough to do the same work locally, so that is what we do.
How it is funded
The site is free, with no accounts and no daily usage limits; the only caps are per-file size limits that keep processing within your browser’s memory. It is supported by unobtrusive Google AdSense ads and by readers who choose to buy us a coffee. We will never add watermarks or paywalls to the converters that exist today.
Who builds it
NeedToConvert is built and maintained by an independent developer. Questions, bug reports and tool requests are welcome on the contact page.
