Unit converters

5 tools

Convert length, weight, temperature, area and data sizes with exact factors.

How these tools work

The unit converters show every unit at once as you type, so there is no 'from' and 'to' pair to set and no button to press. They use the exact defined factors, such as 0.3048 metres to the foot and 0.45359237 kilograms to the international pound, and nothing you enter leaves the page.

Length Converter covers metric and imperial lengths from nanometres to nautical miles. Weight Converter handles kilograms, pounds, ounces, grams, stone, carats and tons. Temperature Converter converts Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin and Rankine with the formulas explained. Area Converter works with square metres and square feet, acres, hectares, dunams and square miles for property listings, land and floor plans.

Data Size Converter puts decimal units such as MB and GB beside binary units such as MiB and GiB. That difference is why a new 1 TB drive shows up as about 931 GB on a computer, and why a download size and the space it takes can disagree. Each tool page also explains its conversions, so you can check any result by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Are the conversion factors exact?

Yes. Imperial units use their legal definitions: one inch is exactly 2.54 cm and one pound exactly 0.45359237 kg. Temperatures are converted with the exact formulas rather than a rounded lookup table.

Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?

Drive makers count in decimal units, where 1 TB is 10^12 bytes, while Windows counts in binary units of 2^30 bytes but labels them GB. Data Size Converter shows both systems side by side.

What is a dunam?

A land measure used across the Middle East. The metric dunam used today equals 1,000 square metres, or about a quarter of an acre, and Area Converter converts it to every other unit.
