How these tools work
The editors are a different kind of tool from the converters on the rest of the site. Instead of taking a file in and handing a new one back, each editor is a complete application that opens inside the page: a canvas or a document, panels, menus and keyboard shortcuts, the way a desktop program works. NeedToConvert serves every editor from its own pages, so everything still happens on your device. Nothing you open, write or paint is uploaded, there is no account, and the editors are free.
The shelf covers the jobs a desktop suite usually does. Photo Editor works with layers, masks and PSD files; PDF Editor annotates, fills forms and rearranges pages; Word Processor, Spreadsheet Editor and Presentation Editor open and save DOCX, XLSX and PPTX; Vector Editor draws paths and logos and exports SVG; Page Layout Editor builds multi-page brochures with text frames; UI Design Editor lays out screens with components and auto layout; and CAD Editor drafts 2D drawings with dimensions and DXF files. Editors for video, motion graphics, audio and RAW photos complete the set, for footage, animated graphics, sound and the camera's raw files.
Every editor needs a desktop browser, most of them with WebGL2 or WebGPU, and downloads between about 7 and 25 MB the first time it opens, depending on the editor; the browser then keeps it cached, so later visits start in a second or two. If an editor does not start, the page tells you what it needs, and the converters next door keep working for the quick jobs: resizing, compressing or converting a file without opening a full application.
Frequently asked questions
Do the editors upload my files?
No. An editor is a program that runs inside your browser tab. The files you open stay in your computer's memory, and saving or exporting is a normal browser download. The site only delivers the editor's own files, exactly like its JavaScript and fonts.
Why does the first load take a moment?
A full editor is a large program: each one downloads between about 7 and 25 MB the first time you open it, depending on the editor. The browser then caches it, so the next visit starts in a second or two. The download is served by this site, not by a third party.
Can I use the editors on a phone?
They are designed for a mouse or a pen and a larger screen, so the page shows a notice on phones. On a tablet you can open the editor anyway. Laptops and desktops with a current browser work best.
Do the editors open the files I already have?
Yes. Each editor opens and saves the usual formats of its job: PSD for photos, PDF, DOCX, XLSX and PPTX for documents, spreadsheets and presentations, SVG for vector art, DXF for CAD, the common video and audio formats, and the camera's RAW files. Exporting to PNG, JPEG or PDF is a normal browser download.
